Battered veterans of a devastating European war, rebel outcasts too proud to be held by any prison -- for them Australia held no threat, only temptation. For them it was truly the Promised Land. A great continuation to "The Australians" series. I have read some reviews which state that it isn't as much of an "easy read" as the first 4 books. I disagree. I couldn't put it down. I'm anxious to read book #6 "The Colonists". I have been to Australia and to the "Rocks" area. Reading this series helps me visualize just what the origins of a country entail.

Still enjoying this series. I find it a bit addictive actually and wish I had more time to read but volume 5 was not quite as strong. I've been living and loving with the Australians for so long now, I guess it's getting a bit blurry. All the events, all the characters, all the history. That's not a criticism. As I said I am still enthusiastically reading.

Another wonderful book! The corruption in early Australia continues and poor Macquarie is constantly beleaguered by it. I look forward to book 6.
