Long. Long long long and did I mention that it goes on for 2000+ pages? Even the author hates this book because of how long it is.Fortunately, I don't mind huge novels very much, and having read most of this author's other works I can understand his feelings. There's also the foundation of a great story in here if you dig under all the dust. It's the story of a survivor, the last of her entire race, struggling against bleak nothingness for most of her life, trying to hold on to hope. She discovers a way to travel to the past, to before the cataclysm, but at the same time learns that she can't change anything either. It's like receiving the gift of wet fireworks. What good is that? What is the point of having hope anymore if nothing can change? The main selling point of the whole thing, to me, is the environment. Wastelands are somehow made beautiful. The whole backdrop to everything is bleak, but somehow made all the more real. And the airship, and the magic, and the time travel tying things together in a "parallel dimensions" thing! I love it all. I wish it were a video game or something because I would play the hell out of it.
