**ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review**The Shrinemaiden was my first ever erotic fantasy and I was not disappointed. Hesitant at first because I'm so used to contemporary books my hesitance was quickly eased by Annie Eppa's amazing story telling. The Shrinemaiden is the provocative journey of Adalei, a young shrinemaiden who's future is mapped out for her after years of training to be a courtesan. Adalei is to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, the outcome of her first auction will forever shape the rest of her life. This book reminded me of the Hunger Games in some ways. Just as the tributes in the Hunger Games are treated with opulence and manipulated by the power-hungry capital; the shrinemaidens are treated with opulence and manipulated by kings and noblemen except the shrinemaidens are trained and used for sexual prowess. The life of a shrinemaiden is an escape for woman with lavender eyes and offers a much less bleak existence than life without it. During her training, Adalei becomes taken with a guard named Thornton. Their love story begins from there. It has a Romeo and Juliet flair to it in that the two are ill-fated to be together. Through a masterful and conniving plot, their love flourishes and strengthens. However, Adalei endures many obstacles to reach her ultimate goal. There are darker erotic moments in the story as Adalei goes through her duties as a courtesan. But she always remains a quick, smart, strong heroine. Viewing this fantasy world through her eyes is just as gripping as it is engrossing. Twists, secrets, betrayals, and manipulations drive the plot. There were a few instances where I had to re-read certain parts to fully understand what was going on because, like I said, there were twists it was difficult to know what was happening. However, now that I'm finished with the book I think that confusion adds to the mystery. I'm grateful that I was asked to read and review The Shrinemaiden. The interesting, captivating plot was a refreshing change of pace.

I received this book from Netgalley for my honest review.I must say that I liked it even if I wasn’t expecting that there would be so much BDSM, menage etc in it!But still the story was interesting even if the idea is not a novel one. What I mean is that to me it was very similar to Carey’s Kushiel series, but much, much more explicitly erotic!Still the twists and turns in the story were good and kept my attention.Since I’m not so much into the BDSM I sometimes wanted to skip some of those scenes and I didn’t like some of the treatment the heroine, Adelai, was subjected to by the hero, Thornton, like when during a scene that should show us how much he loves her, he uses the F-word in a way I felt was too forceful and not very appropriate.Don’t get me wrong, dirty talk is very OK, but in my opinion, it should be balanced in a very subtle way, otherwise it just become dirty and not sexy at all! But maybe that kind of treatment is normal for BDSM – as I said, I don’t have much experience! On the good side is the writing. The pace of the story is very good. Also the overall intrigue, spying, culture are built very nicely. The culture was what I liked most of all: very, very intriguing! In one word: even if not perfect, I would very much like to read the next books in the series! :D

OMG! What an amazing book. This book was definietly erotic, had a captivating plot, and amazing twists. I don't want to give anything away! Adelai and Thorton were smoking hot and sweet together. There were some darker parts that fit the story and really made you feel for the heroine. I felt so strongly for them and the secondary characters as well. Found myself eagerly reading to see what would happen next. Need Kinlee's book now!

This story was pretty good with great detail and super hot sex scenes. I only give it 4 stars rather than five due to the horrid amount of editorial errors. I will definitely read the next in the maidens series.

What drew me in to this book was how unique the storyline was. I have never read anything like it, where young girls are trained in the art of sex. When I was contacted by Annie herself to review this book, after reading the synopsis, I knew I just had to say yes because anything with smut in it, I am a sucker for, as well as romance. Romance and smut go together! One of the top things I loved about this book was the relationship between Adelai and Thornton. In the beginning, I personally considered it to be a little bit of a student-teacher relationship, just because Thornton was teaching her a few things in the garden. Throughout the book, they do spend some time away from each and I always look forward to the scenes when they are reunited again, and as they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder. I really love how Annie wrote their relationship and how whenever they are reunited again, both characters make the most of it and plus, I got feels for these two. I don't get feels for just any couple! My absolutely favorite scene, without giving too much away, is when Adelai has to get trained before she is sent off to her client and she gets a very special surprise on who her trainer is and since training is for a month or so, it was definitely a very enjoyable scene! What I also really enjoyed about this book was all of the backstabbing and going undercover, when you think this character is on one side, you see that they're really on the other side, it's best if you read the book to see what I'm talking about. But it definitely kept me under suspense because it's hard to pinpoint who the bad guys really are and who you can trust in the book. There were also some secrets that get revealed in this book that made me gasp, so keep a look out for those! The ending..I thought it was beautifully written and it ended really well. And all I will say is that it was definitely a very happily ever after, my favorite type of HEA in fact! I can't wait for book 2 to come out! The second book is going to be about different characters that you meet in this book, a little sad about that because I really enjoyed Adelai and Thornton's story, but it was definitely a great book and had a beautiful ending to it. Who knows, maybe we will see Thornton and Adelai in book 2 for a cameo maybe? THE CHARACTERS: Adelai: First off, I really really really adore Adelai's name, it's so unique and it's a very beautiful name. Adelai is a very brave girl because in the beginning she is asked to go undercover to take down the current king, I won't go too much into detail about that, but it does get dangerous as the book goes on. Thornton: There's so much I can say about this amazing man! I absolutely adore the love he has for Adelai and I also love how when it's time to work, he will put on his work face and get to work, but when it comes down to Adelai, you see him soften up and he will do anything to protect her. I also loved how he wants what is best for her, there is a moment in the book where he feels himself unworthy of her and it creates some drama between them. But it all works out in the end! Thornton is just a great guy in general, and speaking of general, he is actually a general in the book if I remember correctly, who doesn't love a man in uniform? You also meet the person in charge of the Temple, she is definitely a motherly figure to Adelai and you could tell she favors her more than some of the other girls because she has been raising Adelai ever since she (Adelai) was a little girl. There are also some significant characters in the book that you meet and some not so significant. Overall: I give this book 5 stars! I just adored the relationship between Adelai and Thornton and the fact that this book had a little BDSM in it was a nice touch to it as well! The storyline was so unique and definitely the first of its kind that I came across! I also thoroughly enjoyed the undercover aspect of it and the backstabbing and etc. I highly recommend you read this book, you won't be disappointed and I can't wait for book 2!

4.5 starsThis was smoking HOT!!! Seriously, one of the hottest books I’ve ever read. I don’t often read the fantasy genre, but the synopsis for The Shrinemaiden had me intrigued so I decided to give it a whirl when Ms. Eppa kindly offered a copy to read and review. I don’t care who you are, or what genre of smut you like to read, if you like smut that is more than just soft porn on paper, this is a must-have in anyone’s collection. I was so hot and bothered throughout, I almost missed the story itself, but that would have been a shame because it was equally incredible. The plot was a clever take on Queen Elizabeth’s Court lies and intrigue, and I also got a feel of a Roman Empire style thrown in. Every single time I thought I had it all figured out, another curveball was thrown, and I found myself sitting up and thinking, ooh, tell me more! I had a great admiration for Adelai’s character, not only a highly sensual woman, but also one sharp cookie able to hold her own in a world filled with treachery and danger. Thornton was the definition of a sex on a stick alpha male, but was so much more than just brawn. Nothing better than an old school military man, mmmm.I’m dying for the next in the series, The Slavemaiden. Kinlee and General Falen are introduced here, I loved them, and I think that one is going to be just as hot as this was, but we have to wait until Feb/Mar 2014 (whimper). It’s already in my TBR, and I will be begging Annie Eppa to let me review.Read more reviews @

I won this during the Erotic Enchants 2013 Holiday Party and I am so glad I did! This was my first time reading anything by Annie Eppa and it was great! She really knows how to put a story together. There was sex, intrigue, love, and betrayal but not necessarily in that order. There were twists and turns that I never saw coming. I love that in a book! Adelai is intelligent, brave, and honorable. She is asked to do things that would frighten any other shrinemaiden but she does them because it is the right thing to do. Thorton is strong and loyal. He knows what he wants and will do anything to get it. Adelai is sure he is committed to her but his loyalties are questionable in the end. There are bdsm elements in this story. There are no sex clubs or playrooms but there is bondage, submission, and dud-con/rape. As hot as the sex is between Adelai and Thornton, there was one scene that had me cringing and wishing it would just end. Ms. Eppa has created an alternative world where Kings are in power, shrinemaidens are held in the highest regard yet bought or sold for the pleasure of others, prisoners of war are sold at auctions as slaves, and greed and corruption rule everything. This is a series I will continue.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book! Totally not what I expected, but in a good way. I figured there would be some sex scenes in the story (I mean, after reading the synopsis, how could you not expect it) but I didn't expect them to be so HOT! I really admired Adelai. Even with everything she goes through during the story, she is able to keep her head held high and remains strong. She will use what she goes through to become a stronger woman. I also really liked how she wasn't like any of the other Shrinemaidens. She was extremely bright, and always wanted to learn more, even though it may have been looked down upon by others. Then there is Thornton (fans face). He is one hot alpha male! Not only was he sexy as sin, he was extremely smart (which makes him even hotter) and always seemed to bring the best out of Adelai. You're taken through Adelai and Thornton's story that is full of twists, turns and betrayals. This is a book that once you start it, it's not one you'll be able to put down. I would recommend this book to any of my friends that are into hot erotica books! I can't wait to read more from Annie Eppa!

I won this book from Erotic Enchants holiday party, and I was NOT disappointed!!! This is an erotic fantasy that is heavy on EROTIC. There are twists and turns, lots of like-able characters (along with plenty of villains), exciting highs and depressing lows. The romance (not just the erotic portion) is heart-warming! I really don't want to leave this world behind and can't wait to read the next book in this series.

While I enjoyed "The Shrinemaiden", it was increasing difficult to suspend disbelief enough to allow the story to evolve. Although the sex scenes were scorching hot, the book would have benefitted from a bit more background on cultures and characters. It might have enhanced the love story and turned a decent story into a really good one.

Loved the book and can't wait for more! This was a freed read I received from winning a prize but I will have no problem buying the book in the series. I was wondering through out the book about some of the other characters relationships. I hope they will be talked more about in the next books.!
